UMIGARI is a first-person fishing and exploration game developed by Chilla’s Art. The player controls a solitary fisherman navigating coastal waters with a small boat and a harpoon. The main objective is to capture fish, return to port, and exchange the catch for money. Earnings are used to upgrade equipment, allowing access to more distant areas of the ocean. The structure of UMIGARI is based on incremental expansion rather than mission-based progression.
Fishing in UMIGARI requires manual control. The player must aim the harpoon and time each shot accurately to secure different species. Each fish has a defined market value, which directly affects the pace of advancement. After completing a trip, the player docks at port to sell the catch and review upgrade options.
The economy is simple but central to progression. Fuel capacity limits early exploration, and insufficient planning can result in wasted trips. Upgrades such as extended fuel tanks, improved lighting, and better engine performance increase operational range. The player’s ability to explore new regions depends entirely on reinvestment decisions.
UMIGARI is structured around interconnected gameplay systems:
These mechanics support a loop of departure, resource gathering, and calculated return.
As exploration extends farther from shore, environmental conditions begin to shift. Visibility may decrease due to fog or darkness, and new forms of marine life appear. Some creatures encountered in remote zones display irregular shapes or behaviors. These variations introduce tension without replacing the primary fishing mechanics.
UMIGARI avoids extensive dialogue or scripted narrative segments. Instead, it builds atmosphere through isolation, sound cues, and environmental unpredictability. Routine fishing tasks remain consistent, but repeated exposure to unfamiliar discoveries changes the tone of exploration. The result is a system-driven experience where economic management and environmental uncertainty coexist within a gradual progression framework.
