An unexpected email introduces you to a disturbing mystery in Smile Dog, a psychological horror game inspired by the internet creepypasta about a cursed photograph. The message contains an attachment with a simple spot-the-difference puzzle, but opening it begins a series of unusual events. As you interact with the computer, strange images appear, messages become increasingly personal, and the desktop starts behaving unpredictably. The story develops through your attempts to understand what is happening.
Instead of exploring a physical environment, you interact with a simulated desktop inspired by Windows XP. You can open programs, examine files, and read emails using the mouse. At first, the computer contains familiar applications and ordinary messages. However, unexpected errors and changes gradually interrupt these activities. The game encourages you to investigate unusual details and pay attention to information hidden inside different windows.
Much of the gameplay revolves around examining digital content. The original attachment contains a puzzle where you compare two images and identify differences. Other applications provide additional opportunities to explore the computer and discover information.
The main gameplay activities include:
As you progress, the emails become more disturbing and suggest that someone knows what you are doing. Changes to the desktop also become more noticeable. Windows behave unexpectedly, images appear in unusual places, and familiar applications no longer seem entirely reliable. You must follow the available information and decide how to respond to the situation.
Smile Dog does not feature traditional levels, combat encounters, or character upgrades. Its progression follows a continuous story involving computer interactions and psychological horror. The game contains five endings influenced by your decisions and actions. Replaying allows you to explore alternative outcomes and discover additional details about the mysterious image. The main objective is to understand the connection between the email attachment, the unusual computer activity, and the entity associated with Smile Dog.
