ADOFAI, short for A Dance of Fire and Ice, is a rhythm game where two orbiting planets travel along a path made of geometric tiles. One planet represents fire, while the other represents ice. They take turns rotating around each other, and you must press a button at the correct moment to move them forward. The game has no traditional storyline or characters to develop. Your objective is to follow the rhythm, complete increasingly difficult musical levels, and reach the end of each track without making mistakes.
The controls are based entirely on timing. You can press almost any keyboard key or click the mouse to move the planets to the next tile. However, the timing between presses changes according to the shape of the path. Straight sections follow a regular beat, while sharp corners require faster inputs. You must listen to the music and understand how the track’s geometry corresponds to its rhythm. Pressing too early or too late causes you to fail and restart.
Each world introduces new musical patterns and movement challenges. The paths gradually become more complicated, requiring you to recognize changes in timing rather than simply pressing at a constant speed.
The main gameplay features include:
ADOFAI organizes its main content into twelve worlds, each introducing particular rhythmic concepts. Early stages teach basic timing, while later worlds explore triplets, unusual angles, changing speeds, and complicated patterns. Each world includes introductory sections followed by a final challenge.
Practice Mode allows you to learn difficult passages without repeatedly starting from the beginning. After completing a world, you can unlock its Speed Trial and attempt the track at higher speeds.
There are no combat mechanics, character upgrades, or collectible equipment. Progression depends on completing musical challenges and mastering increasingly difficult rhythms. The game also includes a level editor and support for custom levels, allowing players to create and experience additional tracks beyond the main campaign.
