Hollow Knight Silksong places the player in control of Hornet, a character introduced in the original Hollow Knight. She is taken to a new land called Pharloom, a kingdom filled with towers, caverns, and dangerous regions. Her task is to climb through this world, confronting enemies, uncovering mysteries, and discovering the truth behind the silk threads that shape Pharloom. The game shifts the focus from descent into an ancient kingdom to ascent toward the top of a new one.
Movement in Hollow Knight Silksong emphasizes agility and speed. Hornet can dash, wall-climb, and perform advanced mobility moves such as a grappling hook-style ability, super jumps, and wall grips. These abilities, called Silk Skills and Ancestral Arts, unlock gradually and open new areas for exploration. Just as in the first game, progress depends on discovering tools that expand the ways Pharloom can be navigated and mastered.
Key features of Hollow Knight Silksong include:
Combat differs from the first game, reflecting Hornet’s faster and more flexible fighting style. She uses tools that can break and require repair, encouraging variety and resource management. Crests allow for customization, altering attack patterns and tool slots. Enemies are more aggressive and come in greater numbers, with over 200 types and dozens of bosses scattered across Pharloom. Healing also changes, requiring Hornet to bind silk to restore health, which takes time and risks during combat.
Pharloom is larger and more complex than Hallownest, with over 100 benches, hidden areas, and a structured quest system. These quests, known as wishes, come in categories such as gathering, hunting, and exploration. Completing them unlocks rewards and affects progression. Replay value grows from the branching outcomes and the many optional challenges that shape the story differently depending on player decisions.
Hollow Knight Silksong expands on the formula of the first game by introducing more movement variety, deeper combat mechanics, and a greater focus on quests. Its combination of exploration, strategy, and difficult combat ensures that every playthrough feels unique. With multiple endings and countless hidden paths, it offers long-term engagement. The blend of precise gameplay, challenging encounters, and atmospheric design secures its place as a highly anticipated continuation of the Hollow Knight series.
