BTD1, short for Bloons Tower Defense 1, is the first game in the Bloons TD series, where players defend a track from waves of colorful balloons using different types of monkey towers. Each round introduces a new wave of balloons that follow a set path, and players must place monkeys along the route to pop them before they reach the end. The game starts with only a few tower options and simple balloon types, but the challenge increases as new balloon variants appear, requiring stronger defenses.
Players earn money by popping balloons, which can be spent on placing new towers or upgrading existing ones. Each tower type has its own strengths, such as rapid dart shooting or piercing attacks that hit multiple balloons at once. Choosing the right tower placement is essential, especially on tracks with sharp turns or long straight sections. As the rounds progress, stronger balloons appear, some requiring multiple hits to pop or moving faster, forcing players to constantly adjust their strategy.
BTD1’s progression is based entirely on survival — the longer players keep balloons from escaping, the higher their score. Losing all lives ends the game, but players can start over and try new tower combinations to improve. The game’s simplicity makes it easy to experiment with different approaches, from spreading out towers evenly to creating concentrated defense zones. While later games in the series introduced more towers and complex mechanics, BTD1 remains a straightforward test of placement and timing that introduced players to the core ideas of Bloons Tower Defense.
