Birds Watching is a short narrative game that combines bird observation mechanics with psychological horror elements. The story takes place in a world that has been destroyed by a massive global fire. Civilization has collapsed, and most of the planet has been consumed by flames. The player takes the role of the last surviving human who now lives on a mountain that remains untouched by the disaster. This mountain has become a refuge not only for the protagonist but also for several species of wild birds that escaped the destruction.
Life on the mountain follows a quiet routine. With no other people left, the player spends most of the time observing birds through binoculars. The goal is to identify and document every species that can be found in the mountain reserve. Each discovered bird is recorded in a catalog that tracks the player’s progress.
Observation requires patience and careful exploration. Some birds appear in obvious places, while others stay hidden in more remote areas. Players must move through different sections of the reserve to locate them. Elevated points and clear viewpoints allow better visibility and help locate birds flying across distant parts of the environment.
The mountain serves as a small open world designed for free exploration. Players can move across different zones of the reserve while searching for birds and discovering new locations. The world is filled with paths, observation spots, and hidden areas that reward careful exploration.
During the game the player can perform several key activities:
The companion follows the player during exploration and occasionally reacts to changes in the environment. It creates a small sense of companionship in an otherwise empty world.
As the player continues exploring and documenting birds, the situation begins to change. What initially feels like a quiet wildlife observation routine gradually becomes more unsettling. Certain events suggest that the protagonist might not be completely alone on the mountain.
